WLJ - Day 4 Whale Rider Activity 2

This movie is about a girl called Paikea. Her granddad didn't like her because she was a girl. She wanted to prove she can be the chief and the leader. Paikea wanted to ride on a whale like her ancestor. This movie was filmed in New Zealand and won lots of awards.

Hector's dolphins

Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

I think fishermen can still fish but use a fishing rod not a net because if you use a net the dolphins will get stuck and die.

  1. Kia ora Julianna,

I really like the way that you have thought about the question of banning fishing in Farewell Spit and come up with a nice compromise. I think that it would be a great idea to ask that fishermen use a different method of fishing in the area that would minimise the chances that they accidentally catch and hurt the native dolphins.

This is a wonderful example of critical thinking at its best. Great job, Julianna!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)

  2. Hi Rachel

I think that we should tell the Prime Minister to change the law so the dolphins don't get caught and damaged. Thank you for commenting on my blog.

    1. Hi Julianna,

I agree - we really do need to protect and preserve our special native species. If we don't advocate for them and so what we can to save them, we risk losing them...

As always it is so great to blog with you :) I hope that you're having a really good start to Term 3. I'll look forward to seeing you when I come into Pt England on Friday to hand out the certificates and the prizes for the Winter Learning Journey programme.

      See you soon!!

      Rachel
