WLJ - Day 4 Whale Rider Activity 2

This movie is about a girl called Paikea. Her granddad didn't like her because she was a girl. She wanted to prove she can be the chief and the leader. Paikea wanted to ride on a whale like her ancestor. This movie was filmed in New Zealand and won lots of awards.

Hector's dolphins

Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

I think fishermen can still fish but use a fishing rod not a net because if you use a net the dolphins will get stuck and die.

WLJ Day 4 Swimming with the Sharks - Activity 1

Farewell Spit

Farewell Spit has been in the news recently as a number of whales accidentally swam into the spit and became stuck on the beach. They were unable to swim back to the ocean because the water was too shallow. Many local people tried to save the ‘beached’ whales. Please follow this Farewell Spit link to learn more about what happened. On your blog, describe what the local people did to try and save the beached whales.

It was very sad News. I heard that people splash water on the whales. They also put towels to cover the whales from the sun, and they dug the sand to reach the water. But three hundred whales died.

WLJ Day 3 Wild Eyes

I went on wild eyes. This is a site where kids can do fun activities.  I pretended to discover a giant Moa bone, giant egg and giant foot prints in my back yard. I dressed up like a scientist.

WLJ Day 2

I like Rangitoto Island because I liked the ferry trip to the Island. When you get there you can go on a bush walk and see lots of native birds and plants. When you go to the top of the volcano you can see a beautiful view.

Interview with Laura (The youngest person to sail around the world)

1. Did you miss your parents?
2. Did you enjoy sailing all around the world?
3. Did you feel lonely?
4. What was your most exciting part of the trip?
5. How long did the journey take you?

Interview with my brother (5 favourite things to do outdoors)

1. Swimming
2. Kicking a ball
3. Playing with nerf guns (a nerf arsenal? this is what he said)

These are the flags I created.

This flag has a sun. The red and the yellow represents the summer season in NZ. The blue represents the sea and the ocean. The green represents the grass and the trees.

This flag has a mountain. It represents all the mountains in NZ. The blue represents the sky. The sun represents how hot it can be in summer.
